Schnabl Engineering without luck at season start in Bahrain
07-04-2008
For the season start of the Porsche Mobil 1 Supercup last weekend team Schnabl Engineering travelled to Bahrain. The team from Butzbach started with Jiri Janak (CEZ) and Darryl O'Young (CHI).
„Already last year we started in Bahrain with these pilots", teamhead Sven Schnabl stated, just before free practice on the 5.4 kilometers long track situated in the desert. „Our aim must be a ranking among the top ten. Our drivers have the potential for that."
During free practice session the new 420 PS stong Porsche 911 GT3 celebrated its premier in the framwork of the Formula One World championship.
Qualifying on saturday morning decided starting grid for both races on sunday. Janak drove nineth quickest time and in doing so reached the aim of getting among the top 10. Darryl O'Young took place 15. Due to tyre problems in qualifying for the second race, Janak had to be satisfied with position 15., while O'Young improved to place eleven.
„We have good chances for the races", Sven Schnabl explained, having a strong driver duo in the first race. Janak showed a great performance with a lot of fights, bringing him up to rank six meanwhile. O'Young too was in good position, but then his display showed several error messages. He stopped the Porsche at once. At first the team suspected an entire engine failure but later on one diagnosed that „only" a smaller part of the gearbox was broken. „Darryl could have been able to go on racing, since it was only a technical fault, not a mechanical one", Schnabl said. „On the one hand we are happy, that the engine is OK, on the other hand race was over very early."
Nevertheless Janak did a good job and finished race on rank nine. „It was a brilliant race with great fights", Janka stated, „Although I had smaller damages on the car, that is typical for a brand cup", the stundent of law smiled.
The story of race two is told quickly: Janak could not complete the formation lap. His drive shaft broke, though it was only 900 km old. This fault of material did not support the good mood in the team of course.
O'Young had a good start, although outside temperature of 29 degrees and in car temperature of 50 degrees were high. But then an opponent crashed into his car, causing a lot of understeering in the following. So he dropped back to rank 22. Nevertheless the Asia Porsche Cup winner of 2006 drove quick lap times and finally ended the race on place 16.
Teamhead Sven Schnabl: „The beginning was good and we could keep the lap times of the top teams. To the end we were withouth luck and indeed we imagined season start not this way at all. But Janak was able to drive fast lap times and could have been able to reach a top result in race two."
Now there is not much time for a break. On monday morning the team returned from Bahrain and already on friday the season start of the Porsche Carrera Cup Germany is ready to go in Hockenheim in the framework of the DTM.
